90: Metal Tea Party for Marianne Brandt (Saturday, October 3)
The Metal Tea Party is a ladies-only event to celebrate the contributions of Bauhaus women. The evening is specifically dedicated to Marianne Brandt, whose birthday is on October 1st. She was a Bauhaus artist famous for her collages and metal designs (like teapots!) that are still produced by Alessi. Please bring your favorite metal kitchenware or other object to use as in instrument, and/or come dressed in a metallic costume. I've attached an image of Brandt for inspiration (it might be a good head start for a Halloween costume). I will have tea, spiking possibilities, and vegetarian h'ors d'oeuvres to share with you. After a short reading about Brandt and Bauhaus, everyone will participate in creating a sound recording with our metal objects. No music experience necessary! I hope to avoid any resemblance to a "drum circle" so you are encouraged to bring the strangest metals you can find to convert into instruments. Every participant will receive an audio CD of the evening's noises and credit for participation.
7:30, Saturday, October 3rd
In true Weimar style, we will begin the organized events promptly at 8:00 pm
Please feel free to bring a guest.
Why are no boys allowed?
This event is part of The Bauhaus: 90 Years/90 Days, curated by Dan Godston. As the name implies, this daily event series commemorates the 90th anniversary of The Bauhaus. As many of you know, the Bauhaus was a famous design school and art movement that began in Germany. Although women were admitted, Bauhaus culture was notoriously male-oriented, with women segregated mostly to the weaving workshop. There and in other media, they produced innovative design work which has only recently gained the attention of museums and art historians. Brandt was the only woman from the metal workshop at Bauhaus. I don't want to perpetuate traditional definitions of gender identity, but because of this history of exclusion, I hoped to honor her legacy by limiting the guests to those who identify as female-gendered. My event celebrates the last night of Bauhaus 90/90, and it would mean a lot for me to spend the time with you!
