43: Reading of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's "Architecture and the Will of the Age," with Musical Improvisation (Monday, August 17)

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe died on August 17, 1969 -- 40 years ago today. Donald Gallaspy and Seth Williams read "Architecture and the Will of the Age" by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, while Mike Staron (electric bass) and Dan Godston (horns and small instruments) improvised music. You can listen to a recording of that by clicking on these links: http://www.zshare.net/audio/64844716d750cddd/ (1st excerpt) and http://www.zshare.net/audio/64844755afc42318/ (2nd excerpt). It was recorded at Brown Rice, a Chicago arts space, on August 14.

"Architecture and the Will of the Age" was first published as "Baukunst und Zeitwille," in Der Querschnitt 4, no. 1 (1924), 31-32. This English translation appears in "The Weimar Republic Sourcebook," edited by Anton Kaes, Martin Jay, and Edward Dimendberg (University of California Press, 1994).
