Bauhaus and the Black Mountain poets

Submitted by Dan on Tue, 2009-07-14 21:17

I've read that the pedagogical framework for Black Mountain College was based on the Bauhaus, mostly because of the influence of Anni and Josef Albers. However, BMC was not just the Bauhaus in North Carolina. I'd like to find out more about some links between the Bauhaus and the Black Mountain poets (Robert Creeley, Charles Olson, Denise Levertov, Robert Duncan, etc.). It's interesting to explore connections between art forms, and in this case I'd like to find out more about connections between poetry and visual art. The Black Mountain poets got a lot of inspiration from Abstract Expressionists; Charles Olson's "projective verse" concept seems to draw from Abstract Expressionism. However, I'd be curious to find out if they were inspired by the Bauhaus too. Certainly creative types draw on a broad range of influences...

This year the Bauhaus celebrates its 90th Anniversary. “Bauhaus: 90 Years / 90 Days” is a new project which celebrates the Bauhaus movement; it will take place over 90 days, from July till October 2009. During this 90-day period, projects will be presented to commemorate and pay homage to the Bauhaus in different ways.
