the Bauhaus and ancient civilizations

Submitted by Dan on Tue, 2009-07-14 22:06

I'm curious to find out about possible links between the Bauhaus and ancient civilizations. There are many instances of artists working in different art forms who draw on examples and inspiration from ancient civilizations. The focus on basic geometric shapes such as the triangle, the square, and the circle is one thing that connects design and art in the ancient world with what many Bauhaus artists were using in their work. For instance. Josef Albers' "Repetition Against Blue" and Kinetic (III) reflect his study of Mayan architecture and decoration ("Black Mountain College: An Experiment in Art," p. 36).

This year the Bauhaus celebrates its 90th Anniversary. “Bauhaus: 90 Years / 90 Days” is a new project which celebrates the Bauhaus movement; it will take place over 90 days, from July till October 2009. During this 90-day period, projects will be presented to commemorate and pay homage to the Bauhaus in different ways.
